After Netflix, Disney Plus is set to crack down on password sharing. This decision comes as no surprise since the company has been losing subscribers for the past two quarters. In an effort to limit the number of devices streaming Disney+ on a single account, the company will begin testing new measures and may consider charging extra for password sharing in the future. Password sharing is estimated to cost the streaming industry billions of dollars annually and has become a major source of revenue leakage for Disney+. CEO Bob Iger recently emphasized the need to address this issue, stating that password sharing is a significant source of revenue loss. The password enforcement is expected to start in 2024, with alternative payment options for sharing accounts similar to Netflix. Additionally, Disney will be raising the prices of its streaming services but will offer a discount to customers who choose to bundle Disney+ and Hulu together. Despite efforts to increase revenue, Disney’s streaming service has experienced a decline in subscribers for three consecutive quarters, largely due to the loss of streaming rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) to rival JioCinema.
