Foods can either pose as a weapon or a trigger for health problems. However, it’s not always obvious what you should eat.
Worryingly, a doctor has revealed three popular foods that could be especially bad for your brain.
In a TikTok video, Dr Janine Bowring, a naturopathic doctor, shared the three worst foods for your brain.
The health expert explained that these foods spell bad news because they all contain trans fats.
She said: “According to this study, dietary trans fatty acids adversely predicted memory, especially in younger adults. So it will affect your memory and your proper thinking.”
Dr Bowring recommended being wary of:
- Margarine
- Ready-made cakes
- Pre-packaged cookies
“If your kids love eating these things, you’ve got to get them out of the house because it will negatively affect their brain power and their learning,” she added.
What’s worse, trans fats are not only bad for your brain, but they could also pose a risk for your cardiovascular system. Research, published in The British Medical Journal, suggested that banning toxic trans fats could stop more than seven thousand people in the UK dying from heart disease over a five-year period, saving the NHS £265 million per annum.
Designed to improve taste and increase shelf life, trans fats can increase your “bad” cholesterol levels while lowering your “good” cholesterol.
In a previous interview with Express.co.uk, Marisa Peer, a weight management expert, said: “What this means is an increase in risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.
“Even small amounts can make a significant difference – research published by Harvard found that the risk of heart disease can increase by 23 percent from just two percent of your daily calorie intake coming from trans fat.”
