Rap artist Drake raved about his countrymen and expressed his excitement in an interview with Gianni Infantino as his hometown, Toronto, is set be a host city for 2026 FIFA World Cup. 

The United States, Mexico and Canada will co-host the prestigious tournament in two years with the first game north of the border scheduled for June 12, 2026 in Toronto. 

During FIFA’s schedule announcement program on Sunday, Drake sat down and spoke to the FIFA president about the incredible opportunity. The five-time Grammy winner told Infantino about Canadian culture and the the buzz surrounding the nation as Toronto and Vancouver prepare to host five group matches each. 

‘Not to make this a Canadian promo but we are the nicest people you’ll ever meet,’ Drake said. 

‘Canada as a whole we have an incredible melting pot. But in Toronto, there are just so many different cultural experiences. So when the world comes it’s going to be beautiful.’

Being a long-time sports fan, Drake commended the passion that surrounds the World Cup as nations spanning continents gather for the competition. He also added how Canada will welcome that passion and diversity with open arms.

‘There is passion in many things but the passion for the World Cup is unmatched,’ Drake said. 

‘Of course welcome with open arms and just to have all these different people who are there with passion, with competitive spirit [but] for a great game and great cause. I think it’s just gonna fill the streets with so much energy. We’ll be ready for you in Canada.’ 

The schedule announcement also included an appearance from Kim Kardashian and featured Kevin Hart as a host. Hart commended Drake for always speaking positively about his city as Infantino also praised the rapper for his commitment to his team.

‘Drake was incredible,’ Infantino added. ‘A real soccer fan as well.’

Canada’s men’s team is set to make their third World Cup appearance in 2026. They previously qualified in 1986 and most recently in 2022 but struggled and fell last in their group on both occasions. 

Alphonso Davies has scored the only goal for the Canadians in the World Stage, with the other being an own goal from Moroccan center back Nayef Aguerd.
