Drone records swimmers narrowly escaping shark encounter at Bondi Beach

There have been recent instances of ocean swimmers encountering sharks at Bondi Beach, which were captured on video by a drone. Conservationists are now calling for the removal of shark nets in favor of less harmful deterrents such as drones and drum lines. The footage, taken by Drone Shark pilot Jason Iggleden, shows one swimmer spotting a shark near a school of fish and quickly alerting another swimmer before both safely leaving the area. Iggleden has an agreement with the local council and lifeguards to not report sightings of grey nurse sharks during his regular drone flights unless more dangerous sharks are spotted. Other locals have also had close encounters with sharks recently, including one swimmer named Angie who is part of a group protesting against the use of shark nets. The latest data from the shark meshing program shows that majority of the marine animals caught in the nets were non-target species and many of them were killed. Activists believe that more advanced shark deterrent systems should be used to protect both marine life and humans. The possibility of scrapping shark nets is being considered by the government, pending input from coastal councils.
