Earthquake Of Magnitude 5.8 Strikes Bangladesh Region, Tremors Felt In Tripura, Mizoram, Assam

A disaster management official of Tripura said in Agartala, that tremor was felt in several parts of northeastern region including Tripura, Mizoram, parts of Assam and adjoining Bangladesh.

An earthquake of Magnitude 6.5 on the Richter scale hit N. Coast of New Guinea, PNG at 03:16 am today, the National Centre for Seismology said. 

New Delhi: A moderate intensity earthquake, measuring 5.6 on Richter Scale, hit parts of northeastern region of India and adjoining Bangladesh, officials said. A disaster management official of Tripura said in Agartala, that tremor was felt in several parts of northeastern region including Tripura, Mizoram, parts of Assam and adjoining Bangladesh. According to National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the quake struck at a depth of 55 km from surface at 9.05 a.m.

“Earthquake of Magnitude: 5.6, Occurred on 02-12-2023, 09:05:31 IST, Lat: 23.15 & Long: 90.89, Depth: 55 Km, Location: Bangladesh, India,” the NCS said on X.

With this, at least seven earthquakes were felt in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country this year. The epicentres of most of the tremors were near Dhaka. The epicentre of the earthquake was located in Comilla district. The epicentre was 86km from the BMD Seismic Centre in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Tremors were also felt in various parts of West Bengal. West Bengal Disaster Management Department said that as of now, no damage has been reported from anywhere in the state. “We are yet to get the final report. As of now, there is no report of any damage due to the quake,” an official told PTI.

Officials of the Kolkata Police and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation also said no damage to life or property was reported from the eastern metropolis.

Bangladesh is located in an earthquake-prone zone. According to experts, mild to moderate earthquakes are felt in Bangladesh due to the opposing movements of the Burmese Plate and the Indian Plate. They also say that there is a significant accumulation of energy at the junction of these two plates, which is seeking a way to be released, causing frequent earthquakes.
