The RFS said the fire is moving erratically in multiple directions, has burnt more than 5,800 hectares and is yet to be contained.

Further north at Kyogle, another emergency warning is in place for the blaze at Upper Horseshoe Creek.

The fire is under control, but people living near Barkers Vale have been told to shelter in place.

Several other fires are at watch and act level, with a total of 112 incidents statewide.

A total fire ban is in place for several districts and the weather bureau has several fire weather warnings in place for the state.
