Currently, there are over one crore central government employees and pensioners receiving a 42 percent dearness allowance. The dearness allowance is provided to compensate them for rising prices. After the release of the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI) data by the Labour Department, it is expected that the Centre will soon increase the Dearness Allowance for government employees. Reports suggest that the DA is likely to be increased to 46% this time. The AICPI June index showed a significant jump, reaching 136.4 points compared to the previous month’s index of 134.7 points, indicating an increase of 1.7 points. Shiva Gopal Mishra, the General Secretary of the All India Railwaymen Federation, has stated that they are demanding a four percentage point hike in dearness allowance. However, it is expected that the government will increase the DA by three percentage points to 45 percent. The proposal for the hike will be presented to the Union Cabinet for approval. The announcement regarding the increase in DA is expected to be made in September, and if approved, it will be effective from July 1, 2023. The DA revision for central government employees occurs twice a year, from January to June and from July to December.
