An Earthquake hit Fairbanks, Alaska on Sunday

An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 struck Fairbanks, Alaska on Sunday morning at around 7:56 AM local time. The United States Geological survey reported that it hit Badger in Fairbanks. According to preliminary data presented by the agency, the quake was located at a depth of 7.3 miles.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4. However data suggested that the quake was felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. No significant damage or injuries were reported. In Salcha, which is about three miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.

Social media users reported that they felt light shaking. “M4.5 earthquake occurred at 7:56 am on Sun, 1/28 and was located 1 mi NE of Salcha at 7 miles depth. It was felt in Fairbanks, North Pole and other interior communities. It is an aftershock of the M5.3 Jan 19 Salcha EQ,” Alaska earthquake center said in a post on X, platform formerly known as Twitter.

“-40°F and a 4.4 magnitude earthquake. Welcome to Fairbanks, Alaska! Have a nice day,” another one added.

“Just had another pretty sizable earthquake here near Fairbanks. It is being reported as a magnitude 4.4. I felt more wave like motion with this one compared to the 5.3 last week, but I was also sitting versus standing…” a third person tweeted.

Areas close to the epicenter – Harding-Birch Lakes, Eielson Air Force Base, Moose Creek, North Pole, Badger and Fairbanks. This comes as the temperature in the area is in the negative.
