India’s burgeoning electric mobility sector is set for a transition as the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME-II) program has concluded on 31st March 2024. However, the EVs sold beyond March will continue to receive the benefits until the funds are available. Additionally, to further carry on the momentum of EVs, the central government’s new Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024 (EMPS 2024) is effective from today. Here, let’s quickly take a look at the benefits under the new program.
EMPS 2024: Segment-wise benefits
With a total outlay of Rs 500 crore, EMPS 2024 focuses on subsidizing the purchase of electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws) and electric three-wheelers (e-3Ws) for four months, from April to July 31st 2024.

The scheme offers a subsidy of up to Rs 10,000 per e-two-wheeler, targeting to support the purchase of approximately 3.33 lakh electric scooters and motorcycles.
On the other hand, the scheme provides a higher subsidy of Rs 25,000 for small e-three-wheelers and a maximum of Rs 50,000 for larger ones, aiming to benefit over 41,000 vehicles.
While EMPS 2024 has a limited timeframe, it provides a crucial bridge as the government plans and implements the next phase of its e-mobility mission. The program’s goal is to facilitate the purchase of 3,72,215 electric vehicles (EVs), consisting of 3,33,387 electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws) and 38,828 electric three-wheelers (e-3Ws), encompassing 13,590 rickshaws and e-carts, along with 25,238 e-3Ws in the L5 category. It’s important to note that incentives will exclusively be extended to vehicles that are equipped with advanced battery systems.
