The iconic song Chaiyya Chaiyya from the 1998 Bollywood film Dil Se, directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala, quickly became one of the most iconic and memorable songs in the history of Indian cinema. Recently, choreographer Farah Khan revealed that many prominent actors downright rejected her when she approached them for Chaiyya Chaiyya and that’s when she met Malaika Arora just two days before shooting the song.
During an event in Kolkata, Farah said that she approached 6-7 actors including Shilpa Shetty and Raveena Tandon but every heroine refused to do the song, nothing worked out.
Talking about roping in Malaika for Chaiyya Chaiyya, Farah said, “So that’s what I say, ‘You have to be on the right time at the right place’.” She added that nobody knew Malaika was a model. But she knew her because she was seeing Arbaaz Khan at that time. She didn’t even know if Malaika can dance or not.

The song is set against the backdrop of a moving train, featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Malaika Arora dancing on the roof of the train. AR Rahman’s innovative approach to music composition, combined with Gulzar’s poetic lyrics, resulted in a song that transcended cultural boundaries.

The picturization of the song is equally noteworthy. The daring choreography by Farah Khan, coupled with the breathtaking cinematography by Santosh Sivan, created an unforgettable cinematic experience.
