Fervo Energy achieves milestone leveraging oil drilling techniques to harness geothermal energy

Fervo Energy, a geothermal startup, announced a significant technical achievement with its commercial pilot project, Project Red, in northern Nevada. The company uses drilling technology from the oil and gas industry to create reservoirs deep underground, allowing for the production of carbon-free energy resources. Fervo successfully completed a 30-day test at its pilot plant, reaching internal temperatures of 375 degrees Fahrenheit and generating conditions for 3.5 megawatts of electricity production. This milestone paves the way for geothermal energy to have a larger role in the transition to clean energy. Fervo has already started construction on a 400-megawatt project, expected to be operational by 2028, which would power approximately 300,000 homes. The company has received significant investment, including a partnership with Google, as it works towards commercializing geothermal energy at scale.
