Floods Devastate Northeast China: 6 Dead, Countless Missing, and Thousands Forced to Evacuate

In northeastern China, heavy rainfall and the aftermath of Typhoon Doksuri caused devastating floods, resulting in casualties and the evacuation of thousands of people. The city of Shulan in Jilin province experienced five consecutive days of rainfall, leading to six deaths and four missing individuals. Over 18,900 people were evacuated from the city, and images showed waterlogged streets surrounding homes and factories. The average precipitation in the city reached 111.7 mm (4.4 inches) by Friday afternoon. This record-breaking rainfall adds to China’s struggles, as some areas also face scorching summer heat and drought. In Heilongjiang province, heavy rains flooded farms and streets, leading to the evacuation of thousands of people. The capital city, Harbin, had to evacuate over 53,000 people, and significant crop damage was reported. In Jilin province, the city of Yushu saw 19,000 people evacuated due to flooding. In Hebei province near Beijing, fresh alerts for rainstorms were issued, exacerbating the already severe flooding in the region. Floodwaters in Zhuozhuo started receding, allowing some evacuated residents to return home, but the death toll in Baoding reached 10, with 18 people still missing. Floods also caused damage to roads and bridges in the Yesanpo Scenic Area.
