Florence Pugh Proves She’s the Sheer Trend’s No. 1 Fan at the Oscars-After Party

Judging by the sheer volume of see-through looks at the Vanity Fair Oscars After-Party (see what we did there?) it’s safe to say that the latest trend has landed in Hollywood. But Florence Pugh came to remind us that she is a true sheer trend trailblazer.

The actor, who joined her Oppenheimer cast-mates onstage to accept the film’s Best Picture win, changed into a look befitting of a celebration. Pugh, who wore a Del Core dress with elevated straps on the Oscars red carpet, hit the afters in a sheer number from Simone Rocha’s Jean Paul Gaultier spring 2024 couture collection.

Her outfit—look 10 from the show—was affixed with all the bells and whistles: a lightweight, layered peplum that extended into a train, white embellishments on the bodice, and 3D sprouts emerging from the peplum and train. Her pointy-toed pumps, also sheer, were made of a nude mesh and crystal appliqués. She accessorized with a resplendent diamond necklace, which she coordinated with her earrings and rings.

This is one of Pugh’s most thrilling sheer looks to date, especially given that it came from such a buzzed-about collection. But the Oscar nominee has never been afraid to bare it all. She hit the 2024 Golden Globes in a sheer red Valentino gown, and donned a reflective Galvan two-piece for the Dune: Part Two press tour. But Pugh deserves props for repping the sheer look well before it fell into favor. In 2022, she arrived at the Valentino Haute Couture show in a hot pink dress that sparked so much controversy she took to Instagram to defend it.

No matter when the sheer trend does dip out of public consciousness, Pugh is an avowed lifelong fan. “Anything sheer is so magical,” she told Vogue last summer. “If you feel comfortable, and the clothing allows you to feel comfortable, it’s like a little present that you get to have. As well as the dress being on you, it’s also your body underneath.”
