Former 49er blasts NFL MVP who called Brock Purdy ‘game manager’

“It’s bulls—t,” an exasperated Sherman said twice on air before Bayless apologized to viewers for the expletive. “Because — And I get tired of hearing it. … I’m tired of hearing about people saying it with nothing to do with anything on the field. All he does is put it on tape. If you can’t convince people by playing great football at the highest level, in the highest level, then you aren’t going to convince them.”

After an interruption, he continued, “I’m saying that’s wrong. He went to the playoffs last year, he played well. As a rookie! We’re not talking about a five-year vet,” Sherman pleaded. He then responded to Bayless, “I just don’t get it. … I’m tired of people having opinions that aren’t based on anything. You’re sitting here saying, ‘Well, he needs to prove—’ Prove what? He’s leading the league in almost every category.”

Purdy, one of the odds-on favorites to win this year’s NFL MVP alongside Dallas Cowboys star Dak Prescott (who Newton coincidentally also put in the “game manager” category on his YouTube show), is tops in the league in completion percentage (70.2%), touchdown percentage (7%), yards-gained-per-pass-attempt (9.9), quarterback rating (116.9) and QBR (74.7). He’s leading the only team in the NFL that’s clinched a playoff spot and has dominant wins over the two teams on the Niners’ tail: the Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles.

It’s all part of the reason why Sherman was at a loss on Wednesday.

“All he can do is when he lines up on the football field, Keyshawn, he goes out there and plays at a really high level and helps his team win,” he said. “He has done that consistently this season. And the only thing you tell me is he has to prove himself.”

Johnson responded explaining he’s a Purdy believer based on what he’s been able to do for a near full season, but “the mass of people, this is why this conversation keeps coming up about Brock Purdy — you’ve got to let your emotions go — they want to see him take them somewhere.”

Like, say, to the best record in the league and top spot in the NFC entering the final four games of the regular season, which is where San Francisco currently sits.

“Are you listening to yourself?” Sherman replied to Johnson. “Because you do not make sense. Stop. They wanna see him take them somewhere? Skip, he took them to the NFC Championship last year. Make it make sense.”
