Former Odisha governor Rajendran passes away | India News

CHENNAI: M M Rajendran, who retired as chief secretary of Tamil Nadu and also served as Odisha governor, passed away in a private hospital in Chennai on Saturday. He was 88 and is survived by his wife Suseela Rajendran, two sons and a daughter.
Rajendran, who passed out of Madras Christian College, was the 1957-batch IAS topper. He served in Tamil Nadu for more than three decades.He was district collector of Tirunelveli when his close friend and the late chief election commissioner, T N Seshan, was helming Madurai district. He was Ramanathapuram collector too. “At that time, he handled the cyclone in Dhanushkodi in 1964. This experience helped him handle the cyclonic storm that hit Odisha in 1999, along with the state government while he was governor of the state,” chief minister M K Stalin said in his condolence message.
Rajendran was appointed chief secretary of Tamil Nadu during President’s rule in 1988 and continued in the post in the successive DMK regime led by M Karunanidhi until January 1991. Thereafter, he went to the Centre on deputation and was secretary of Parliamentary affairs and Youth Affairs and Sports.
Tamil Nadu governor R N Ravi expressed heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Rajendran. “Deeply pained at the passing away of M M Rajendran, former Governor of Odisha. An accomplished administrator and a well-known author, he will be remembered for his yeoman public service. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Ravi said.
Stalin hailed Rajendran’s performance in state administration and constitutional posts that he held.
“Rajendran was one of the finest statesmen and a visionary. A person of extraordinary kindness and considerate towards all. He laid a code of conduct and exemplary for all of us to follow,” said P N Vedanarayanan, a 1955-batch officer and a colleague of Rajendran.
