Fortnite developer Epic Games has announced plans to release a surprise update for Star Wars Day. Fortnite will celebrate Star Wars Day on May the 4th with a boatload of new items, skins and songs across Battle Royale, LEGO Fortnite and Fortnite Festival. The final major download before the current season comes to an end in a few weeks, update 29.40 has a May 3 release date on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, Android and Nintendo Switch. Needless to say, the big new Star Wars update will be accompanied by a period of server downtime, which means no Fortnite for the next couple of hours. Epic Games will disable Fortnite matchmaking at around 8.30am BST, before taking the game offline in full on all platforms at 9am UK time. Fans can expect the game to come back online at around 11am BST.

The news was announced by Epic Games on X, alongside a preview about what to expect from the latest game update.

“Prepare to go back to a galaxy far, far away… Star Wars is entering the Fortnite universe soon! Downtime begins at 4 AM ET with matchmaking ending shortly beforehand.”

In a follow-up tweet, Epic announced that offers have returned to the Item Shop, before once again confirming downtime: “Offers in the Item Shop have returned! Reminder: Downtime for v29.40 begins May 3rd at 4 AM ET.”

According to Fortnite insider Shiina, new Star Wars skins and bundles include Dagobah Luke, Lando Calrissian and AWR Trooper. There’s also a Chewbacca skin, which can be seen in the trailer below.

That’s on top of new tracks available for Fortnite Festival, as well as a Rocket Racing bundle for 2,800 V-Bucks.

Indeed, the Cantina Band Jam Track will be in rotation for free once the update goes live, but only for a couple of hours.

It’s also worth pointing out that as the final major update of the season, the new download could contain game files for the end of season event.
