Gaming giant Epic has rolled out a new solution to combat toxic behaviour within Fortnite. The tool allows players to document instances of bullying and harassment through voice reporting.
This feature records voice chats in convenient 5-minute segments, serving as crucial evidence when reporting misconduct.
Automatic safeguards for young players
For players under the age of 18, Epic has implemented an automatic activation of the voice reporting feature.This ensures that younger users are equipped with a robust mechanism to address and report any inappropriate behaviour they may encounter in the gaming environment.
User-controlled settings for adults
Players aged 18 and above now enjoy greater control over the application of voice reporting. Within the game’s main settings, they can choose between an “Always On” mode, applicable across all channels, or an “Off When Possible” mode, which deactivates the feature in Party Channels with matching preferences among friends.
Addresses privacy concerns
To address privacy concerns, Epic has emphasised that audio clips are not stored indefinitely. Instead, they are kept locally on the user’s device unless submitted as evidence. Epic reassures users that each new recording automatically replaces the previous one, ensuring only the most recent five minutes are reportable.
Under standard conditions, audio clips are set to auto-delete after 14 days or upon resolution of the reported issue. In case of an appeal by the accused player within this timeframe, the deletion may be extended for another 14 days. However, Epic commits to retaining audio clips as required by law.
Epic is not alone here. Other gaming companies like Microsoft, Activision, and Sony have already implemented measures to contain such things on their platforms. The latest approach by Epic puts Fortnite in line with other measures that other platforms have implemented.
