We are excited to announce that we finally had the opportunity to review the Fujifilm X-S20 after a long wait. The original X-S10 caught our attention with its unique design and the addition of IBIS at an affordable price. Now, we have the new X-S20 in our hands and we are putting it through its paces. Join us as we dive into the camera’s features and performance.
The Fujifilm X-S20 has a striking resemblance to its predecessor, the X-S10, with some added settings on the mode dial. Upon first touch, we noticed that the buttons on the X-S20 feel more refined. They have a slightly stiffer and raised profile, making them more enjoyable to use.
One of the standout features of the X-S10 was the three command dials, which we preferred over the more classic dials found on the XT series of cameras. The X-S20 retains this setup, including the third dial that can be customized for ISO, white balance, or other options. We are big fans of these modern command dials.
The camera’s grip is also very comfortable, with a slightly wider profile to accommodate the new larger W-235 battery. With 750 CIPA-rated shots and even more in real-world use, the X-S20 offers impressive battery life at its price point. Additionally, weighing only 17 ounces with the battery and memory card, the X-S20 remains lightweight.
The X-S20 features a 3-inch 1.84 million dot LCD panel on the back of the camera. This setup works well for photography and is especially suited for video, which aligns with the camera’s hybrid design. The X-S20 also retains its 2.34 million dot EVF, which, while not the highest resolution, is comparable to other cameras in its price range.
In terms of performance, the X-S20 boasts the same BSI X-Trans 26-megapixel sensor found in the X-S10 and other Fujifilm bodies. This sensor delivers high-quality images with good dynamic range and beautiful colors. Despite concerns about its age, the sensor still captures plenty of detail.
One of the standout features of the X-S10 was its IBIS, and Fujifilm has upgraded the system in the X-S20 to provide seven stops of stabilization. This is a significant improvement considering the modest price increase. Combined with the sensor, the X-S20 produces stunning images.
The X-S20 also benefits from an improved processing unit, which enhances its video capabilities. It now offers 4K 60p video recording, even in 10-bit, allowing for additional dynamic range. The camera also supports B-RAW or ProRes RAW recording out to an external recorder in 6.2K through the micro HDMI port.
One of the most exciting additions is the 6.2K open-gate recording feature, which allows for shooting up to 30 frames per second using the entire sensor. This provides the flexibility to recompose videos or switch between horizontal and vertical compositions without sacrificing resolution.
Fujifilm has included various Film Simulation modes, including the new Nostalgic Neg mode, which adds warm tones and a classic contrast level. These modes, combined with the X-S20’s tonal range, allow for creative and aesthetic video production.
The X-S20 also offers improved autofocus performance, especially in low-light conditions. While tracking mode still needs some refinement, it is usable for most situations. The camera’s eye-detect feature has also been enhanced, delivering more accurate results.
Overall, the Fujifilm X-S20 impresses with its image quality, improved processing power, and enhanced video capabilities. With its lightweight design, comfortable grip, and customizable controls, it is a versatile camera that can meet the needs of both photographers and videographers.
