If you’re holding on to any old PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo video games, then this might be the week to get rid of them. Confirming earlier rumours, UK retailer GAME has officially announced plans to close down its trade-in business. While GAME will continue to sell video games, accessories and merchandise as usual, customers will no longer be able to trade their retro games from February 16. The retailer will continue to sell second-hand games while stocks last.
In an official statement on its website, the retailer said that it hadn’t taken the decision lightly.
GAME explains more: “With effect from 16/02/2024 the Trade-In programme operated by Game Retail Limited which offers customers the ability to trade-in unwanted consoles, games or gaming accessories in-store for credit will cease in accordance with clause 1.4 of the ‘Trade-In Terms and Conditions’ found at game.co.uk and will no longer be offered by GAME.
“GAME will also stop selling pre-owned games and consoles in-store and online at game.co.uk once stocks have run out.
“We haven’t taken this decision lightly and we are extremely grateful for your loyal custom throughout the years and remain committed to continue to give our passionate gaming fans the best customer experience.”
Needless to say, the 2% Game Reward points given to Game Elite members on trade-ins will also cease after the closure date.
On the plus side, vouchers issued for previous trade-ins will remain valid for the foreseeable future.
With GAME shutting down its trade-in business, gaming fans will have to look elsewhere when attempting to cash in on their old games.
UK retailer CEX continues to offer cash and in-store credit for video games and consoles, including retro titles from the 80s, 90s and beyond. In terms of high-street retailers, Cash Converters also accepts old games and consoles.
There are more options online, including the likes of eBay, Amazon and Music Magpie.
Selling on eBay allows you to set the price, although you’ll have to pay a commission on anything you sell.
