New Delhi: April 22, i.e. today’s day is celebrated as the World Earth Day each year; it is an annual event when the entire world comes together to keep our environment safe, support protection and conservation of Mother Earth and highlight important issues of sustainability, preservation and pollution control among other things. The day is aimed at creating a change, highlight the importance of nature and also raise awareness about these issues. Today, on World Earth Day 2024, Google Doodle is celebrating the day by showing the different letters of its logo with aerial views of natural beauty from around the earth. World Earth Day 2024: History, Significance, Theme

The World Earth Day 2024 was first celebrated in 1970 when US senator Gaylord Nelson and a Harvard student Denis Hayes thought of this after being disturbed by the January 1969 Oil Spill in Santa Barbara, California. April 22 was the date chosen to be celebrated as World Earth Day because it was a weekday between Spring Break and Final Exams so that there’s more student participation. In twenty years by 1990, Earth Day became a global phenomenon.

The day is celebrated to help people realise the importance of Mother Nature and how it is our moral responsibility to keep the nature and Earth preserved. Speaking of the theme for World Earth Day 2024, it is ‘Planet vs Plastics’ which highlights the alarming issue of plastic pollution and its horrific effects on the environment.

As mentioned earlier, the World Earth Day 2024 is being celebrated by Google, via a Google Doodle where every letter of the GOOGLE Logo is represented by an aerial view of a natural site of the earth. The letter ‘G’ is an image of The Turks and Caicos Islands, ‘O’ is an image of the Scorpion Reef National Park in Mexico, which is knon as Arrecife de Alacranes; its the largest reef in the Southern Gulf of Mexico and is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The second ‘O’ is a photo of Iceland’s Vatnajökull National Park which was established in 2008; this national park safeguards the largest glacier of Europe and therefore it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. ‘G’ is the Jau National Park from Brazil which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a huge forest reserve in the Amazon rainforest. ‘L’ is formed with the Great Green Wall which was launched by the Africa Union in Nigeria; its aim is to combat desertification across the country by afforestation. ‘E’ is the Pilbara Islands Nature Reserves in Australia which is part of the 20 nature reserves of Australia.
