According to a report by 9to5Google, Google is developing the Pixel Watch 3 in two sizes.Despite arriving with key specification upgrades over the original one, Google kept the design of the Pixel Watch 2 largely similar.
Apart from the crown being visually different, the latest Pixel Watch 2 has even retained the 41 mm diameter and 12.3 mm thickness of its predecessor. Otherwise, users have to look at the underside sensor stack to tell the two watches apart.
Pixel Watch 3: What to expect
Rumours suggest that if Google is planning to offer the Pixel Watch 3 in a size bigger than its predecessor, the upcoming watch may pack a bigger battery and more sensors. A bigger size will also mean a larger display which can also be a major spec bump.
The report didn’t clearly mention how Google may differentiate functionality between the two sizes beyond the screen and maybe a slightly larger battery. The recent reorganisation of Fitbit and Google hardware should not impact product development in the short term. However, the company may change its plans before the launch.
Google may also need some time to minimise the bezel and add a larger screen on the smaller model. However, given the curvature, the existing bands may not be compatible with the new larger size.
To compare, Samsung offers the Galaxy Watch 6 in 40 mm and 44 mm sizes. The South Korean tech giant also sells the 43 mm and 47 mm versions of Galaxy Watch 6 Classic with identical screen sizes (1.31-inch and 1.47-inch). The company differentiates between the models by adding a rotating bezel and using stainless steel instead of aluminium. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch Series 9 is available in 41 mm or 45 mm.
