Compact digital cameras continue to have a revival with searches for the Nikon Coolpix soaring by over 8,500% in the last year.
According to research from second-hand online retailer musicMagpie, hype on TikTok is driving up the demand for compact point-and-shoot digital cameras of the early 2000s.

However, data collected by U.K.-based musicMagpie suggests that it is the Nikon Coolpix that is the most sought-after compact camera β with Google searches for it soaring by over 8,507% in the last 12 months.
According to musicMagpie, searches for the Nikon Coolpix camera on TikTok have risen by 713% and videos with the hashtag #nikoncoolpix have amassed over 47 million views on the platform.

Furthermore, eBay searches for the Nikon Coolpix have skyrocketed by 700% in the last year, showing that there is not just an interest in the camera but that people may be actually buying it too.
musicMagpie says that other retro tech devices like the Motorola Razr, iPod Nano, and Sony Walkman have also seen an increased search popularity in recent months. However, according to the research, these devices trail the Nikon Coolpix by a wide margin.
The Nikon Coolpix is So Popular Because Itβs Pink
However, researchers at musicMagpie say that the success of the Nikon Coolpix has nothing to do with the quality of the camera. The Nikon Coolpix instead seems to be so popular because the camera is available in a pink color.
Perhaps driven by the success of the movie Barbie last year, searches for the Nikon Coolpix in the color pink on TikTok are up 488% in the last year. Meanwhile, eBay searches for the camera in this shade are up 525%.
According to the Mail Online, Nikon Coolpix cameras in black or silver sell for anywhere between $25 to $76 depending on their condition. However, pink versions of the camera are regularly listed for around the $178 price point.
Orange proved to be the second most popular color for the Nikon Coolpix β with searches for the camera in this shade rising by 200% on TikTok.
This is not the first time TikTok users have driven up the demand for a certain camera. PetaPixel previously reported on how TikTok users dramatically drove up the price of the Fujifilm X100 after a surge in interest.
