Ahmad Al-Azzam, 25, is fighting for life after he was shot several times in the head and found slumped in the driver’s seat of a Toyota.

He remains in an induced coma.

Just 50m away, a couple aged 19 and 22, were also shot in the neck and back, while sitting in a Mazda.

But police are playing down fears of an escalation in organised crime, insisting this shooting is not gang related.

“It’s a brazen, tragic shooting of three people,” Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said.

“We can’t find at this stage any links to any organised crime conflict.”

Former NSW Police Detective Peter Moroney told Sunrise he believes it could have been a case of “wrong place, wrong time”.

“Whoever carried out the hit on the second gentleman clearly didn’t want any witnesses around,” he said.

NSW Premier Chris Minns described Sunday’s attack as “vicious and violent” but says police have sufficient resources to curb any escalating criminal underworld tensions.

“We’re in constant communication with NSW Police about the resources that they do have to keep the public safe and if there’s changes that they need, both in legislation or resourcing, of course we’ll come to the party,” Minns said on Monday.

Police from Auburn are investigating with assistance from the State Crime Command.

“We’re trying to establish what both parties were doing at the location,” Superintendent Simon Glasser said on Sunday.

About five minutes after the shooting, a third car was found alight on Amy St in Regents Park.

Inquiries are underway to determine if the incidents are linked, Glasser said.

Anyone with information or who was in Greenacre or Regents Park near where the incident happened are being urged to contact police.
