One of this year’s biggest releases is about to make its debut exclusively on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Developed by Heavenly Sword studio Ninja Theory, the sequel to 2017’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice has a May 21 release date. UK fans will be able to start playing at 9am BST on Tuesday morning. It will be available as a standalone game costing £49.99, or as part of Xbox Game Pass, which is available for as little as £1 as part of a 14 day trial for new customers. If you’ve pre-ordered the game, you can actually pre-load Hellblade 2 ahead of launch, which means you can start playing the moment Microsoft makes it available to customers. The game weighs in at around 40GB on Xbox, so it shouldn’t take up too much room on your hard drive.

Hellblade 2 was originally announced during The Game Awards, all the way back in 2019.

It features an upgraded third-person combat system, as well as various puzzles and environmental challenges for players to overcome.

However, what really makes the sequel stand out are the stunning Unreal Engine 5 visuals, which have impressed in pre-release footage.

A potential visual showcase for the Xbox Series X, it also utilises a dynamic weather system, which should result in a more immersive and atmospheric experience.

The sound design was also a real highlight from the original game, something which is due to make a return in the sequel.

Players will have to deal with lead character Senua’s psychosis, specifically the voices in her head that both help and hinder her progress.

The game itself takes place in a mythological version of Iceland during the Viking era.

Microsoft explains more: “Intent on saving those who have fallen victim to the horrors of tyranny, Senua faces a battle of overcoming the darkness within and without.

“Sink deep into the next chapter of Senua’s story, a crafted experience told through cinematic immersion, beautifully realised visuals and encapsulating sound.”

Other games joining Xbox Game Pass in May include Lords of the Fallen, indie hit Chants of Sennaar and EA Sports NHL 24.

That’s on top of Immortals of Aveum, Galacticare, Hauntii, Moving Out 2, Firework and Rolling Hills.
