Hyundai Unveils Exter, a Micro SUV, in India Starting at Rs 5.99 lakh to Challenge Tata Punch

Hyundai India launched the micro SUV Exter with introductory prices ranging between Rs 5.99 lakh and Rs 9.31 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), marking its entry into the entry-level SUV segment in the Indian market.

The new SUV will directly compete with Tata Motors’ Punch. It is equipped with a 1.2-litre petrol engine available in both manual and automatic variants.

The five-speed manual trims, offering a claimed fuel efficiency of 19.4 km per litre, are priced between Rs 5.99 lakh and Rs 9.31 lakh. The five-speed automatic version is priced at Rs 7.96 lakh, boasting a claimed fuel efficiency of 19.2 km per litre.

The CNG version of the Exter is priced at Rs 8.23 lakh and has an efficiency of 27.1 km per kg, as per the company’s claims.

The Exter features a boot space of 391 litres, a ground clearance of 185 mm, a dash cam with dual cameras, an electric sunroof, and six airbags as standard. These specifications were showcased at the launch event by the company.

Hyundai India MD and CEO Unsoo Kim stated at the launch event that with the introduction of the Exter, Hyundai has become a full-range SUV manufacturer in the country. The company has invested Rs 950 crore in developing this model. Hyundai Motor India COO Tarun Garg added that the Exter will bring in additional sales volume for the company and strengthen its overall SUV portfolio. He further mentioned that with the launch of the Exter, sales in the entry-level SUV segment could reach 20,000-22,000 units per month.

Garg stated, “Exter is our eighth SUV model in the country. With this launch, we are now the only company to offer products in all six SUV sub-segments.”

Garg also shared that the contribution of SUVs in the company’s overall sales has increased to 54% from 34% in 2019.

Hyundai already sells SUV models like Venue, Creta, Alcazar, Tucson, Kona Electric, and Ioniq 5.

According to industry data, Tata Punch currently records monthly sales of around 11,000 units. The model sold 1,29,895 units in 2022 and 67,117 units in the January-June period of 2023.
