The latest rule requires all US managers to work from an IBM office or client location at least three days per week. In a memo shared earlier this month, the company’s Senior Vice President John Granger outlined the new policy, reports news agency Bloomberg.
Managers (with few exceptions such as medical issues or military service) who are currently working remotely must relocate to within 50 miles (80 kilometres) of an IBM office by August 1.Those not willing to relocate near an office will have to “separate from IBM.”
In a statement, an IBM spokesperson emphasised the company’s belief in the value of in-person collaboration. The company said that face-to-face interactions make employees “more productive, innovative and better able to serve our clients.” This policy aligns with previous comments from IBM CEO Arvind Krishna. He stated that promotions will be less common for remote employees. Meanwhile, some IBM teams already had similar attendance requirements, so this memo extends the mandate company-wide for all US managers.

Over the past year, many companies across industries have been reinstating office attendance requirements and have replaced earlier incentives with stricter policies.
Despite these policies, data from Kastle Systems office occupancy rates remained around 50% of pre-pandemic levels throughout 2023. Apart from IBM, other tech majors like Amazon and AT&T also asked their remote workers to relocate near offices.
