The Beat team has been speculating for months about the future of Ms. Marvel and the circumstances surrounding her recent death in Amazing Spider-Man #26. However, it seems that our questions have finally been answered. According to an Entertainment Weekly exclusive, it has been revealed that Kamala Khan will return as an Inhuman/mutant hybrid in Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant, a four-issue mini-series launching in late August. The series will be co-written by Iman Vellani, the actress who portrays Kamala in the MCU, and Sabir Pirzada, a writer on the Ms. Marvel Disney+ series and the writer of Dark Web: Ms. Marvel last winter. Carlos Gomez and Adam Gorham will provide interior artwork, along with covers by Sara Pichelli. Jamie McKelvie has designed a new costume for Kamala, a character he initially created the designs for 10 years ago.
Vellani, a first-time comics writer and longtime comics fan, expressed her excitement to jump into comics. She emphasized that Kamala’s Inhuman heritage will remain intact even as she becomes a mutant. Pirzada praised Vellani’s passion and dedication to the project, noting her extensive knowledge of comics.
Marvel provided a brief description of the premise of Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant. After being brought back using Krakoan Resurrection Technology, Kamala discovers that she is a mutant. However, before she can come to terms with this revelation, the catastrophic FALL OF X throws her world into chaos and leads her on a secret mission on behalf of the X-Men.
In a bonus page from Fallen Friend, it was revealed that Cyclops has plans for Kamala’s future, and she will make her triumphant return in the upcoming X-Men: Hellfire Gala. This annual Gala is expected to lead into the imminent Fall of X sweeping across the mutant world. Interestingly, according to an Empire interview with Sana Amanat, the co-creator of the character, the original plan for Kamala was to introduce her as a mutant. In this series, they were able to revisit that initial idea.
Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant will replace the previously solicited CLASSIFIED series, and the first issue will be available in comic shops and digitally on August 30th.
