Incidents of extremism, terror down by 65%, says Amit Shah

NEW DELHI: Sharing that 188 police personnel laid down their lives in the line of duty between September 30, 2022 and August 1 this year, home minister Amit Shah on Saturday said the efforts of the country’s brave cops over the last decade have pushed down incidents of terrorism, left-wing extremism, northeast insurgency and ethnic violence by 65% from their peak levels. In his address on Police Commemoration Day which he marked by paying homage to police martyrs at the National Police Memorial here Shah also referred to the three bills introduced in the LS to replace the British-era Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code and the Indian Evidence Act.
‘BNS, BNSS will speed up criminal justice’
He said that the proposed laws will comprehensively overhaul the criminal justice system, reflect Indianness and protect the rights of every citizen in accordance with the spirit of the Constitution of India. Shah said the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, along with initiatives like the Police Technology Mission and Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System, will bring about transparency and speed in the criminal justice set-up.
The Police Technology Mission, mooted by PM Modi at the 2021 DGP/IGP conference in Lucknow, is aimed at adopting future technologies for grassroots policing requirements. The ICJS seeks to enable seamless transfer of data and information among different pillars of the criminal justice system, like the courts, police, jails and forensic science laboratories, from a single platform.
Shah said ICJS was conceptualised at the PM’s behest to end the pendency of cases in courts. The home minister said their efforts of police personnel in line with the Modi government’s zero-tolerance approach to terror have helped normalise the situation in three hotspots left-wing extremism-hit states, northeast and Jammu & Kashmir. “The Modi government has enacted strict laws and have also made efforts to make its counter-terrorism best in the world by setting up the Police Technology Mission,” he said. Shah said internal security or border security of any country is not possible without a vigilant police system.
