Increased Regional Tensions Prompt European Nations’ Evacuations Amid Niger Coup

Foreign nationals stood in a queue outside an airport in Niger’s capital on Wednesday morning, waiting for a French military evacuation flight. This comes as regional talks continue about the response to the recent military coup. France, Italy, and Spain have announced evacuations for their citizens and other Europeans in Niamey, following concerns about their safety after President Mohamed Bazoum was detained and the military seized power. The United States has not yet announced plans for evacuation, but some of its citizens have left with the help of European countries. France has already evacuated more than 350 French nationals and other individuals from Niger and other countries. Italy has also conducted an evacuation operation, with 99 passengers, including 21 Americans, returning to Rome. Germany, on the other hand, does not see a need to evacuate its troops in Niger at this time. The West African regional bloc ECOWAS has threatened to use force against the junta if the president is not released and reinstated within a week. However, neighboring countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea have rejected this threat, stating that it would be considered a declaration of war against them. The defense chiefs of ECOWAS member states will meet in Nigeria’s capital to discuss the crisis, and force option has been considered by the diplomatic community. Activist group the M62 Movement has called for residents in Niamey to block the airport until foreign military forces leave the country.
