Intel announces ‘Make in India’ initiative, here’s what it means for buyers

Intel has announced its partnership with eight Indian Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) companies and Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) to expedite the production of laptops in the country.
The companies that Intel has collaborated with are Bhagwati Products Ltd, Dixon Technologies India Ltd, Kaynes Technology India Ltd, Optiemus Electronics Ltd, Panache Digilife Ltd, Smile Electronics Ltd, Syrma SGS Technology Ltd, and VVDN Technologies Private Ltd.
Intel’s collaboration with Indian laptop manufacturers will enable them to produce fully-functional entry-level laptops. For some of these companies, this will be their first venture into laptop manufacturing. The partnership between Intel and the Indian manufacturing ecosystem aims to empower them to meet both local and global demand.
“I am very pleased that global organisations like Intel are partnering with India, helping to build and catalyse the electronics manufacturing ecosystem for laptops and compute. This aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to drive India’s Digital Economy to $1 Trillion and enable the electronics manufacturing ecosystem to contribute $300 billion by 2025-26. It is our Prime Minister’s determined goal that the Indian Electronics Ecosystem should have deep and broad capabilities and that Indian Electronics Manufacturing Companies should grow, scale, and expand their footprint as trusted players in the Electronics Global Value Chains,” said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT.
Intel says it will be offering crucial technological and operational advantages with its comprehensive knowledge of the IT industry ecosystem to create a strong foundation for the laptop manufacturing industry in the country.
The chipmaker says that it is committed to accelerating technology-driven growth in alignment with the Make in India campaign.
As part of this collaboration, Intel shared its expertise and provided support to Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) for both Semi Knocked Down (SKD) and Completely Knocked Down (CKD) processes. The collaboration involved the use of state-of-the-art Surface Mount Technology (SMT) lines, establishment of a quality control process for components, and benchmarking of finished products.
Santhosh Viswanathan, VP & MD, India Region at Intel, said, “The collaboration between Intel and the Indian manufacturing ecosystem marks a pivotal moment for the Indian electronics industry. Intel has been the fundamental enabler of several electronic ecosystems across the world, and we are excited about fueling the same in India. Bringing in Intel’s technology-related investments and global system supply chain ecosystem knowledge exemplifies our dedication to fostering electronic manufacturing capabilities in India. By enabling the laptop manufacturing process – from surface mount technology assembly to finished product – we are not only meeting the demands of the Make in India initiative but also contributing to the technological progress of the nation.”
