Reed Jobs, the son of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, has started a venture firm called Yosemite VC that aims to tackle cancer. The firm has already raised $200 million and will focus on developing new treatments for the disease that claimed Jobs’ father’s life. In creating Yosemite VC, Reed Jobs is expanding on his work at philanthropic organization Emerson Collective, founded by his mother Laurene Powell Jobs. Reed Jobs’ decision to launch the firm was influenced by his father’s battle with cancer, which led him to switch his focus from becoming a doctor to pursuing a career in oncology research. The firm has received investment from venture capitalist John Doerr, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, The Rockefeller University, and MIT. Despite initially not wanting to become a venture capitalist, Reed Jobs realized the impact he could make by incubating and directing a venture. The Yosemite VC firm will operate as a for-profit business while also maintaining a donor-advised fund to support innovative projects. In addition to his venture efforts, Reed Jobs is actively involved in philanthropy and has established competitive grant programs and a nonprofit organization to make patient genomic and clinical data available to researchers. He has three siblings: Lisa Brennan-Jobs, Eve Jobs, and Erin Siena Jobs.
