A video of a modified Tata Safari has gone viral on social media. As seen in the video, the modified SUV features a head-turning 6×6 drivetrain. The video, due to the uncommon modifications made to the SUV, has been gaining traction on social media.
Tata Safari: What modifications are made
The most dramatic change is the addition of a third axle, extending the car’s length considerably. In the video, it can be clearly seen that the car’s length has been increased significantly beyond the B-pillar, while of course, also adding more to the wheelbase.
This modification has given the Safari a beefed-up look, featuring 6 alloy wheels. Other tweaks include an extended roof rail on the top, going beyond the company-fitted black-out rail. Despite the SUV’s increased length, the entry points remain unchanged, with the original back doors retained from the factory.

Real question: Can this beast legally ply on Indian streets?
As per the law, such drastic modifications are a no-go in India. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) strictly prohibits alterations that significantly change a vehicle’s design from the manufacturer’s specifications. These modifications often lack proper certification and testing, raising safety concerns for the driver, passengers, and fellow motorists.
Hence, while the 6×6 Safari may be visually captivating and suitable for extreme off-road trails on specialized tracks, it will not be legally permitted for road use. In the video, it is mentioned that the owner has extensively modified the SUV according to personal preferences but refrains from driving it on public roads. Instead, it remains parked at home or is used within local premises.
