It was a good final night of the regular season for the Winnipeg Jets.
Not only did the team tie both the franchise records for longest win streak (eight) and wins in a season (52) with a 4-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks, but goaltender Connor Hellebuyck secured the team’s first William M . Jennings Trophy.
The award is given to the goalie(s) of the team with the fewest goals against during the regular season. Winnipeg gave up 199 this season, one less than the 200 given up by the Florida Panthers.
A goalie has to play in a minimum of 25 games to be eligible to capture the award, which is why only Hellebuyck won. Backup Laurent Brossoit played in 22 games.
Hellebuyck, 30, finished the season with a 37-19-4 record, 2.39 goals-against average with a .921 save percentage. He is the first solo winner of the award since 2018 when Jonathan Quick won with the Los Angeles Kings.
The Boston Bruins’ tandem of Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman won last season.
Hellebuyck and the Jets will now turn their attention to Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, where they will take on Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche.
