Jony Ive, the former design chief of Apple and lead designer of the iPhone, is reportedly discussing with Sam Altman, CEO and founder of OpenAI, the development of an “iPhone of artificial intelligence.”
Earlier, The Information described the project as the “hardware for the age of AI.”
Ive and Altman are said to have had a “brainstorming session,” as reported by The Information, then Financial Times adding that the two met at Ive’s design firm, LoveForm’s studio in San Francisco.
Altman has tapped Ive’s design firm, LoveForm, to design what could be the ChatGPT-maker’s first hardware product. The two have been discussing what the product could look like, and it is said to be the “iPhone of artificial intelligence” running on OpenAI’s tech. The idea is to create a new device that offers a “natural and intuitive way” to interact with artificial intelligence, similar to how the first iPhone, which Ive designed, changed mobile computing with its touchscreen.
The project would be bankrolled by the CEO of Softbank, Masayoshi Son, investing a staggering $1 billion on Altman’s AI hardware. According to reports, Son has also proposed the involvement of Arm, the chip designer in which SoftBank holds a 90 per cent stake.
It is reported that Son, Altman, and Ive have been discussing the possibility of creating a new company that would leverage the talent and technology of their respective groups. However, no deal has been agreed upon yet, and it may take several months before a formal announcement is made.
According to sources, identifying a design or device is still in its early stages. They two are said to be discussing many different ideas of how the device would look, but none of them is still locked. If a hardware product is ever created, it will take years before it is brought to market.
