Julie Bishop ditches trademark hairstyle for radical new look

Former politician Julie Bishop has become known over the years for her trademark cropped blonde hair.

But the 67-year-old has wowed followers with a brand-new look, ditching the short and sleek cut for something completely new.

“Blonde ambition!” Bishop wrote, sharing a video to Instagram of a feathered longer hair cut with a lot more texture than her usual style and a lighter blonde colour.

Tagging Sloane Salons in North Cove, Sydney, her post was hashtagged #newhaircut with a blonde female emoji.

Bishop’s video was soundtracked by the Blondie song Call Me.

Most of her followers on Instagram loved the new look.

“Love love love! Blondes have more fun,” one wrote, while another likened the cut to a style made famous by a Hollywood actress.

“Giving Meg Ryan vibes,” the fan wrote.

“Loving your hair a bit longer, Julie.”

One follower said Bishop “always got it right in the fashion department”.

The former foreign affairs minister, who is now chancellor of the Australian National University, has always been upfront about her interest in fashion and style — for political as well as personal reasons.

“When I became foreign minister, I felt there was more we could do to boost Australia’s exports,” she once told the Financial Review.

“The focus, to me, was very much on energy resources, agriculture and increasingly, financial services.

“But I felt that an element of economic diplomacy that was missing was our creative industries, and in particular, fashion.”

She started wearing, and thus promoting, Australian fashion at key events, although she is also known for her love of a good Armani suit.

“I prefer to describe fashion as an under-appreciated form of communication that can send powerful although subtle messages,” she told the publication.

“It is also a significant economic driver in many nations.”

Former Vogue Australia editor-in-chief Edwina McCann once described Bishop as “the first politician here to take fashion seriously, as a billion-dollar industry”.

“For so long, fashion was relegated to the women’s pages – I mean, it still is – but, in fact, it is this huge industry which has a real impact on our economy,” McCann said.

The former Liberal minister was even honoured by toy maker Mattel with a Barbie doll in her image, produced in 2021.

Her propensity to dress up means “JBish” has as many people following her on social media for her fashion choices as for her career achievements.

Every time she debuts a new designer outfit, or indeed haircut, her fans sit up and take notice.

When one follower said they preferred Bishop’s old hairstyle, likening her former sleek look to Princess Diana, another objected.

“Diana changed her hairstyle constantly!” they argued.

“Yes, such a great style for you,” agreed another.

“Lovely, youthful and a dash of edgy,” said a third.

“Bravo.”
