Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar recently talked about the negativity that he sees about a particular film which is either generated by warlike fan clubs, or people hungry to go viral after giving an attention-grabbing byte. He also revealed that in his power as a producer, he isn’t above paying people to say good things about his films.
Karan said on the Galatta Plus roundtable that if people who do those vox pops outside cinemas, the ones who are walking up to talk are all wanting to say the most sensational things. But the reality is that the real audience has slipped out and gone away and some people give loud reactions because they want to go viral. “Now, to go viral, they’re f*****g us,” KJO added.
The filmmaker added that they also as PR send their people to praise the film, and that also happens. As filmmakers they struggle to make a mark. As a producer, one will make every last-ditch attempt to make his/her film be heard. So, while he may critique criticism, he is also riding on their backs when they praise a film. Karan also stated that he changes with every film. Some films work on their own, so he can take the high ground and stay quiet. Some films are average, so they need to give the impression that they’re doing better than they are.
He concluded by saying that it’s the middle-order film that you have to fight for, that you have to create an aura and energy around. It’s a very interesting exercise.
