It is an open fact that Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan have been close friends for more than 28 years now – it all started on the sets of Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Recalling how he became part of the movie business and became friends with Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar calls it pretty much a stroke of luck.
While being part of a roundtable conversation on Gallata Plus, Karan said, “I hadn’t gone to a film school, though my father produced films.Geographically, I lived in a different part of the city and I was far removed from the nepo kids. I never hung around with them a lot, barring Zoya (Akhtar), Farhan (Akhtar), Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan. It was thanks to Adi (Aditya Chopra) that I got sucked into being on a film set.” It was Aditya Chopra who convinced him to be part of movies and hired him as an assistant director on DDLJ. His first job was to look for a costume for Shah Rukh Khan from the boxes which contained costumes from Sridevi starrer Chandni.

On his meeting with Shah Rukh, Karan told him, “You should wear tight jeans, your body shape would look better in tighter jeans. You should show your Adam’s apple because girls think it is very attractive.’ To this, Shah Rukh said, ‘Just call Adi in.’ When he came, Shah Rukh told him, ‘Who is this? Why is he telling me I should show my Adam’s apple and wear tight jeans? Where is he from?’ Adi told him, ‘He is a townie (a word for South Bombay residents ), he knows all these things, so just listen to him.’ So, Shah Rukh wore that costume and I thought I had found my calling,” Karan revealed.
Karan also revealed that he helped Aditya Chopra write the climax of the film. He shared that Adi thought he would have competition between him and Uday. Karan highlighted that he wrote the climax, which was an adaptation of ‘For Caesar is an Honourable Man’, which was a sarcastic speech and looking at it, SRK got impressed and turned to ask him, ‘Tu Hindi likh sakta hai? (You can write Hindi?) Tu toh townie hai..’ to which he replied , ‘I can write Hindi but my spoken Hindi is not that good.’ Since then, SRK began looking at him in a different light and they became friends.
