It’s not unknown that Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar’s bonding is one of the closest friendships of the industry. While it was SRK who pushed Karan to make his directorial debut, he also went on to work with him in four of his movies, apart from the many which KJo produced. But in a recent interview, Karan has recalled his first ever encounter with Shah Rukh and it was long before the actor started doing movies.
Karan recalled that he had visited director Aanand Mahendroo’s office to audition for a show, when he had just passed his 10th standard.The director said in an interview with Mayank Shekhar for Mid Day’s Sit with Hitlist, that his mother revealed that the director was looking for a large child for a brief part in a show called ‘Indradhanush’ forDoordarshan. He eventually auditioned and landed the part. But at the same time, when Karan was waiting at Aanand’s office, he saw a guy sitting next to him who smiled politely. They were both sitting there for about four hours. The guy was sitting and having tea and finishing a crossword puzzle. Just then Aanand walked in and called that guy, but he said, ‘No actually I came here to say that I don’t want to do TV, I want to do a film. But I really liked the tiny office and I wanted to finish my crossword.’
Later, Aanand told Karan that it was Shah Rukh Khan, who had just done the television show ‘Fauji‘ around that time.
That was Karan’s first meeting with Shah Rukh. Later, KJo was an assistant director on ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ and also did a cameo in the film. That’s when they started bonding and it was then that SRK also motivated Karan to direct his own movie.
