Kia recalls multiple vehicles due to concerns of fire hazards

Thousands of Kia cars have been recalled over an engine fault that could cause the vehicle to catch fire or suddenly lose power.

SL Sportage, YD Cerato, XM Sorento models sold between 2011 and 2015 are affected by the potentially fatal fault.

A total of 5069 cars have been recalled over the fault which can occur if the cars are continuously operated without inspection, according to the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts.

“The engine may exhibit abnormal noise and potentially seize,” it said.

“This may cause a sudden loss of motive power and/or a vehicle fire.”

The results of such a malfunction could be fatal, the department warned.

“(It) could increase the potential risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users, bystanders and/or damage to property,” it said.

Owners of affected vehicles should immediately contact a Kia dealership to schedule an engine inspection.

The engine will be replaced free of charge if required.
