Kmart metal chairs recalled over safety fears

Kmart has re-issued a recall for a metal chair, with further reports of hazardous incidents involving the furniture item.

The metal chairs made in red, white and black were sold nationally between July 2014 and March 2016.

They were originally recalled in 2016 due to a defect with the tapering of the inside bottom of the chair legs.

Product Safety Australia said the defect could “present an entrapment or laceration hazard”.

On Thursday, Kmart re-issued a recall for the metal chairs following “several incidents” since the original notice seven years ago.

“We strongly encourage customers to seek appropriate resolution by either returning the metal chairs to a Kmart store, or requesting plugs to insert into the legs of the chairs,” it said.

Kmart will supply a free plug insert kit to customers. Proof of purchase is not required.

Once the plugs have been inserted, customers can continue to use the chairs.

The chairs can also be returned for a full refund.

The products have the following identifying keycodes located on a sticker under the chair: 42024705, 42122609 and 42127949.

People can contact Kmart customer service for more information.
