Kmart shoppers go wild over $8 ‘dupes’ of cult-favourite Sol de Janeiro costing upwards of $125

Kmart shoppers are obsessing over a new skincare range — with customers claiming it’s a “dupe” of a cult-favourite beauty brand.

The budget retailer’s Summer Solstice collection — featuring $8 body moisturisers, $8 mists, $12 perfumes and $12 body oils — have been flying off the shelves across the country.

Beauty buffs have taken to social media to say they have found what they believe to be an affordable range of Sol de Janeiro, which is sold at Mecca, with prices ranging from $35 to $125.

“My mum got the dupes today and it smells exactly like Sol de Janeiro — I swear,” one claimed.

Another said: “I can’t afford the actual Sol de Janeiro products and I love all of the Kmart dupes”.

One suggested “Kmart is proof that you can charge reasonable prices and not go out of business. Why are we all paying so much money for big brands?”

Another added: “The originals are so expensive so I can’t buy them all so the Kmart ones would be amazing”.

Sol de Janeiro items are priced between $35 and $77 for a body butter and from $42 to $125 for their perfume, which is vastly more expensive than purchasing the entire set of Kmart’s fragrances for $16 or the ‘dupe’ lip balm collection for $12.

Despite the huge price difference, Sol de Janeiro is widely known for its high quality ingredients — including guarana, coconut oil, acai oil, Brazil nuts and cupuacu butter.

The pricier products are made without animal products, parabens, sulfates and artificial colourant.

The beauty brand was also voted “Best for Body” by thousands of shoppers in the 2020 MECCA Beauty Election.

Meanwhile, Kmart customers were divided over the new body care range.

“Rip off for Sol de Janeiro,” one said.

“At the end of the day, the key thing is to smell good, so I’m running to Kmart,” disagreed another.

A third added, “Kmart understands the assignment.”

The range comes just weeks after Kmart shoppers discovered an affordable floor lamp “dupe” costing them $49 instead of $300.

The budget retailer’s ‘Gigi Floor Lamp’ has been flying off the shelves for just $49 — with some comparing it to designer versions costing more than six times the price.

A similar-looking floor lamp from Australian furniture retailer Lifely costs $299.

Kmart’s lamp features a marble base, a metal pole and a shade — made from polyester and polystyrene.

The site finishes by explaining it as “being right at home in Scandinavian-inspired abodes, minimalist interiors, as well as modern homes”.

Kmart’s lamp is described in fewer words as, “an elegant and classy touch to your living room or bedroom with this Gigi Floor Lamp”.

However, customers are loving Kmart’s lamp, with one saying: “What a great find”.
