AMD’s chief technology officer Mark Papermaster made the announcement at an annual semiconductor conference in Gujarat. The conference also featured speakers from Foxconn and Micron. Papermaster emphasized that the India teams will play a pivotal role in delivering high-performance and adaptive solutions for AMD customers worldwide.
The new design center campus in Bengaluru is expected to open by the end of this year and will create 3,000 new engineering roles within five years. Spanning a 500,000-square-foot area, the campus will increase AMD’s office presence in India to 10 locations. Currently, AMD has over 6,500 employees in the country.
India’s IT Minister, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, welcomed AMD’s decision to establish its largest R&D design center in the country.
AMD produces chips for various devices, including computers and gaming consoles. The company has recently announced the development of an artificial intelligence (AI) chip.
Incentive Program for Chipmakers
India unveiled a $10 billion incentive program for the chip sector in 2021. This includes investments from US chip equipment maker Applied Materials and Micron’s semiconductor testing and packaging unit in Gujarat, which amounts to a multi-year $400 million plan and an $825 million investment, respectively.
Furthermore, Foxconn, one of Apple’s suppliers, is reportedly willing to invest around $1.07 billion in manufacturing facilities in Karnataka and $180-200 million in Tamil Nadu.
