Leaked Video Reveals Sony Project Q PlayStation Handheld Running on Android

A leaked video posted on Twitter by Zuby_Tech seemingly provides an answer to one of our questions about the Sony Project Q handheld game-streaming device (via Reddit / Imgur). The video shows a basic version of Android OS running on a plastic-wrapped device, displaying a simple menu system and a QR code. Although this is unlikely to be the final version of the menu, it gives us some insight into the device’s underlying software.

In the video, the person quickly navigates through the menu and showcases the top, back, and bottom of the handheld device. The low resolution makes it difficult to discern many details, but there are some notable features. These include what appear to be four buttons on the top, centered holes on the top and bottom edges (possibly microphones), and speaker slots on the top edge.

In a separate tweet by Zuby_Tech, there is also an image of the tablet with the screen removed, revealing the frame and internal components:

For a closer look at the Project Q, you can refer to our coverage of its May announcement. Sony revealed that it will be an 8-inch tablet with DualSense controllers, although it won’t have the ability to stand on its own like the Nintendo Switch or the Steam Deck. Instead, it will serve as an accessory for the PS5 and stream games from the console, making it more similar to the Nintendo Wii U.

During its PlayStation Showcase announcement, Sony shared limited details about the Project Q. It features a 1080p LCD display running at 60fps and connects to a PS5 via Wi-Fi. Running on Android suggests potential for expanded capabilities.
