The annual UN-sponsored World Happiness Report is out and the list of happiest countries in terms of ranking has been declared. India has maintained its rank; we stand at position 126 on the happiness index.
Finland remained the world’s happiest country for a seventh straight year. Among the 10 most cheerful places in the world are Denmark, Iceland and Sweden.
The report noted the happiest countries no longer included any of the world’s largest countries. “In the top 10 countries, only the Netherlands and Australia have populations over 15 million. In the whole of the top 20, only Canada and the UK have populations over 30 million,” the report said.
The happiness ranking is based on individuals’ self-assessed evaluations of life satisfaction, as well as GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity and corruption.
Afghanistan remains bottom of the overall rankings as the world’s ‘unhappiest’ nation.
“Significantly, the United States of America (23rd) has fallen out of the top 20 for the first time since the World Happiness Report was first published in 2012, driven by a large drop in the wellbeing of Americans under 30,” the report says.
Costa Rica and Kuwait have entered the top 20 at 12 and 13 rank, respectively.
