Luxury carmakers at the forefront in the integration of password-less, identity-based authentication: CEO, 1Kosmos

In the ever-evolving landscape of automotive cybersecurity, the role of passwordless authentication in cars is gaining popularity lately. As vehicles become increasingly connected, the automotive sector is facing heightened cybersecurity challenges. Recognizing the limitations of traditional password-based systems, automotive companies are turning to passwordless authentication as a solution.
Hemen Vimadalal, Founder and CEO, 1Kosmos, spoke about this trend and its implications for the industry. “Passwordless and identity-based authentication can play a crucial role in enhancing security by reducing the reliance on easily compromised passwords and adding additional layers of authentication. This approach can help mitigate the risks of unauthorized access to vehicles, vehicle systems and data, thereby bolstering overall cybersecurity in the automotive sector.” says Vimadalal.
He further added that there’s been a growing trend towards the adoption of passwordless authentication within the auto industry. “ Companies are increasingly exploring innovative authentication methods, including biometrics and hardware tokens, to enhance security and user experience.”
“Certain segments of the automotive industry, such as luxury car manufacturers and companies focusing on advanced integration technologies, are leading in the integration of passwordless and identity-based authentication,” he noted.
Furthermore, regulatory bodies are increasingly recognizing the need for advanced authentication methods in the automotive industry. Regulations such as GDPR and CCPA mandate stringent data protection standards, influencing the adoption of passwordless authentication to safeguard user privacy and enhance cybersecurity. “Advancements and integration of authentication technologies, such as biometrics , will drive further innovation in customer interactions with the available features and technologies of the connected vehicle, improving the overall user experience and brand loyalty.”

As manufacturers prioritize connectivity and user experience, the integration of authentication technologies, such as biometrics, is expected to drive further innovation in customer interactions with connected vehicles. Ultimately, the adoption of passwordless authentication not only improves security but also enhances consumer trust in the safety and security of connected vehicles. “With the advancement of passwordless and identity based authentication and the advent of digital wallets, the automotive sector is a prime industry to take advantage of these newer technologies. We anticipate more collaboration and partnerships over the next 3- 5 years between technology vendors and the global automotive sector.” Vimadalal said.
