Detective Chief Inspector Paul Tickner said the alleged assailant was well known to police.

“We’ve had a number of interactions with him and had a number of warnings in our systems in regards to him being in possession of knifes,” he told reporters.

Tickner added a soccer match was in progress when the incident unfolded.

“People were down there ... kids were playing around the park and suddenly a man’s (allegedly) pulled out a box cutter type knife, and he’s slashed one male with that knife, causing a significant wound to his neck,” he said.

“He’s then chased males and females around that park until a number of people detained him.”

The knife was seized for forensic examination.

The alleged offender was arrested and taken to Nepean Hospital under police guard.

He has since been released and taken to Mount Druitt Police Station.

He was charged with stalking and assault.

He was refused bail to appear before Mount Druitt Local Court on Tuesday.
