Police said the man had suffered “significant” injuries to his torso and head.

Inspector Benjamin McIntyre said officers believe the man may have been the victim of a hit-and-run.

“We’re working on the theory that he was hit by a motor vehicle and that motor vehicle has failed to stop,” he said on Wednesday morning.

McIntyre urged the driver involved to come forward and speak with police.

“Contact us immediately … we really need to speak to you and we appeal to your conscience, hand yourself in,” he said.
