An iPhone played a crucial role in saving a man’s life after a car he was driving fell 400 feet off a cliff in California. According to a tweet by Mike Leum, a member of the rescue crew, the crash detection technology on the man’s phone alerted authorities to the incident at 10:51 p.m. on Friday night on Mount Wilson Road.
Leum stated that the car had plummeted down the cliffside. Eventually, the driver, who remains unidentified, was rescued using a Los Angeles County Fire Department Air Operations helicopter.
The man sustained head injuries, and his current condition is unknown. Apple’s website explains that their crash detection technology is compatible with iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models with the latest version of iOS. It also works with the Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), and Apple Watch Ultra with the latest version of watchOS.
When a severe crash is detected, the user’s iPhone emits an alarm and displays an alert. If possible, the user can choose to call emergency services or dismiss the alert. Apple added, “If you’re unable to respond, your device automatically calls emergency services after a 20-second delay. If you’ve added emergency contacts, your device sends a message to share your location and inform them that you’ve been in a severe crash.”
