McDonald’s and Theobroma in Trouble as Two People Fall Ill After Consuming Burger-Fries & Cake |

Recently, two people fell ill in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, after consuming food from the popular fast food joint McDonald’s (sec 18) and Theobroma Bakery (sec 104). These incidents came to light when the consumers complained over the Food Safety Connect portal of India’s Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) and after which, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) Department of the Uttar Pradesh government collected the food samples of both these outlets.

Apparently, the consumer had placed an online order for an Aloo Tikki Burger and French Fries from the McDonald’s sec 18 outlet and what he received was a stale burger and fries, consuming which he fell ill. Archana Dheeran, the Assistant Commissioner (Food) II of Gautam Buddha Nagar, stated that “Following the complaint, food department officials collected samples of palmolein oil, cheese, tomato sauce, and mayonnaise from McDonald’s, which have been sent to Lucknow for testing purposes.” The lab testing and final report take about 15 days to 1 month to be released, and action will be taken accordingly.

In another incident, another consumer lodged a complaint against Theobroma Bakery and Cake Shop, where a girl fell ill after consuming stale Pineapple Cake from the bakery. The icing of the cake also tasted sour when consumed, the complainant said. Thus, the FSDA has taken the samples of their Pineapple Cake and sent them to the laboratory for checking.

Strict action will be taken by the administration if any deficiencies or defects are found in the food items mentioned in the report. In case of any safety concerns highlighted in the report, there is a provision for a fine of up to INR 10 lakh and life imprisonment.

Just last month, another case of adulteration came to light in Patiala (Punjab), where a 10 year-old girl died after consuming her birthday cake. It was reported later that the cake, which was ordered online, was baked with a high concentration of the artificial sweetener ‘saccharine’. Not just her, but her entire family fell ill after consuming the chocolate cake. High levels of this sweet-tasting synthetic compound can increase the blood glucose levels of a person, which can cause trouble for a human being.
