Melbourne man, 24, suffers serious injuries in hit-and-run incident in Bali

A young Aussie has been left seriously injured and is facing multiple surgeries after a hit-and-run in Bali.

Benji Ward, 24, was supposed to be flying home to Melbourne on Thursday night following a holiday on the Indonesian island, however he will now spend an indefinite amount of time in hospital after he was hit by a car while riding a motorbike.

Ward sustained serious head injuries and broke four bones, including his tibia and fibula, which punctured through his skin.

According to best friend Bailey Scarlett, Ward underwent life-saving surgery on Thursday night and will require another surgery on his leg in three weeks.

“It was really worrying and a bit touch and go as they wouldn’t operate until they saw proof of funds coming in,” Scarlett told 7NEWS.com.au.

“His family are going to try to fly and be with him over here as well.”

A video was posted online of Ward post surgery, in which he said all had gone well.

“Everything’s all good, surgery went well,” he said.

“There’s no bleeding on the brain and all the blood from my head (has) stopped so it’s all looking positive.

“The support and everyone reaching out to me has been amazing, and (I’ve) got a lot of appreciation for everyone.”

The 24-year-old will also need a metal halo splint in his leg which will leave him unable to work for over four months.

The accident is also not covered by Ward’s insurance.

Scarlett has set up a fundraiser to help cover the costs of Ward’s medical bills.

It’s unclear when he will be able to come home, and will all depend on how he recovers from the surgery.

Almost $33,000 has been raised via the GoFundMe campaign so far.

Local authorities are searching for the driver of the vehicle who is believed to have hit at least one other person the same night.
